È conosciuto principalmente per le sue incisioni su legno, litografie e mezzetinte che tendono a presentare costruzioni impossibili, esplorazioni dell'infinito, tassellature del piano e dello spazio e motivi a geometrie interconnesse che cambiano gradualmente in forme via via differenti. Le opere di Escher sono molto amate dagli scienziati, logici, matematici e fisici che apprezzano il suo uso razionale di poliedri, distorsioni geometriche ed interpretazioni originali di concetti appartenenti alla scienza, sovente per ottenere effetti paradossali.
