What is Elite?

It's a first-person, open-world spaceship combat, trading and exploration game set in a 1:1 scale model of our Milky Way. Fight, trade and explore within tens of thousands of human-inhabited systems, each with their own minor political parties, aligned in three major factions, surrounded by hundreds of billions of unexplored stars.

Multiplayer? One background simulation for all players, stored on central servers. 32-player instances, centred on P2P bubbles around player ships, that merge and intersect as you move around. PVP is possible anywhere, but for me is a very rare occurrence outside of dedicated conflict zones.

The galaxy is shared and affected by all players, and every trade or kill has a micro-effect on the markets and political status of the world. Players can flatten markets, force regime change and take part in dev-controlled story events that will adapt to player behaviour.

Online Only? Singleplayer?

A constant internet connection is required, but you can choose to play completely solo or in private groups. Solo play is not ping dependant, and only requires a low-bandwidth connection. Your character can switch freely between Solo and Online modes.

Payment Model? Microtransactions?

One-time payment, no subscriptions, no cash for credits. Cosmetic microtransactions exist in the form of ship skins and decals. Only availble through http://store.elitedangerous.com

Is the game complete? What's missing?

The game is far from complete. Some important features are yet not implemented, and some are bare-bones implementations of the original goals. In the short term, co-op missions and player wingmen will be coming early next year, along with an a gradual growth of the ship roster from 15 to 30 flyable ships. Improvement to mechanics and balancing will be ongoing. In the longer term, walking around, zero-g activity and atmospheric flight will be added in future years as expansion packs.

This is a long-term project.

Technical Problems ? Some very shaky multiplayer connection issues in recent patches, which have been addressed for some but not all. Launch day will likely face the standard MMO connection issues.

No offline mode, constant connection to the galaxy is required.

Some bugs in dynamic missions, at least in the pre-launch version.

General graphical performance is excellent, and the game runs on pretty low-end hardware.
